Montana does not suffer from a shortage of explorers and adventurers. Some notable names, Conrad Anker, the late Alex Lowe, Skip Horner, Tim Cahill, Peter Stark just to name a few. The Trail Head and The Rocky Mountaineers are proud to present another explorer, Bitterroot resident, Jon Turk. Jon has spent the last 40 years pushing himself in remote, beautiful, wild places. His short list includes; Siberian traverse, Altai Mountain traverse, Kayaking Vanuatu, Ellesmere Island circumnavigation. National Geographic  nominated Erik Boomer and Jon as one of the ten “Adventurers of the Year” for their Ellesmere Expedition.

There are many other adventures not listed here, an adventure minded bucket list you might say. Not only is Jon well versed in exploring he is also an advocate. Jon co-authored the first environmental science textbook in the Unite States the same year he earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. He has also written three books chronicling his adventures, Cold Oceans, The Wake Of The Jomon, and The Raven’s Gift.

This passage, taken from his website is a good description of his wanderlust; “At the same time, hounded by restless spirits, I began wandering the globe, visiting people and places that were so far from my childhood upbringing.  Over the decades, I have kayaked across the North Pacific and around Cape Horn, mountain biked through the Gobi desert, made first climbing ascents of big walls on Baffin Island, and first ski descents in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzia.”

Come join us for his presentation on the Ellesmere Island trip Tuesday Nov. 13th, 7:00P.M. Read more about Jon on his website.
