I remember the first mountaineering book I read was John Roskelley’s Nanda Devi: The Tragic Expedition, a spellbinding account of the 1976 expedition to climb 25,645 foot Nanda Devi in the Indian Himalaya. Never having read a mountaineering story I was enthralled, besides being a world class climber, Roskelley is a natural story teller. Which he does without the overpowering ego that some other climber/writers convey.

At the core of the story is Willi Unsoeld and his daughter Devi Unsoeld, named after the peak. Personality conflicts, health issues, and mother nature figure prominently as well. Roskelley made news more recently when he and his son (a former U of M student) climbed Mt. Everest together.

Wednesday, February 6th John will be speaking at the University Center Theatre at 7 P.M. courtesy of Nature-Link Institute.
